A fresh adaptation of Camus’s literary classic, François Ozon’s new version of The Stranger follows Meursault, an emotionally detached French Algerian living in 1930s Algeria. After his mother’s death, he shows little outward grief . When a chance encounter on a sunlit beach escalates, he kills an unnamed Arab man. The story then turns to his trial, where society judges him less for the act itself than for his indifference and refusal to conform to expected social and emotional norms.
