One day in 1949, a young Scottish painter climbed a Swiss glacier. The experience rewired her brain and transformed her art. A member of the St Ives group, Barns-Graham was synaesthetic, her mind linking letters, names and people to particular colours, and the paintings that resulted from her encounter with the glacier formed an emphatic career breakthrough.
