To Make People Happy – John Osborne

There has never been a better time for an uplifting show.

To Make People Happy explores the humour section of second-hand bookshops, jokes overheard on market stalls and finding the positives in life, even if that means sharing a love of Chas and Dave with a taxi driver after the world’s least appealing wedding. With audio clips of moments guaranteed to make an audience happy, this is a poetry show with a difference.

John Osborne’s poems have been longlisted in the Forward Prize, published in The Big Issue, Rialto and The Guardian and broadcast on BBC Radio 1, Radio 3, Radio 4, 6Music, Soho Radio and XFM. He has performed theatre shows and poetry across the UK, at arts centres, theatres, pubs and village halls. He has performed at Latitude Festival, Glastonbury, Bestival, Port Eliot, Green Man, Machynlleth Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Book Festival.

He is a regular on the rural touring circuit, having performed shows regularly in village halls, pubs, churches, community centres and libraries.

Darker Tales & Fairy Stories for Grown Ups…

All good stories get better the later and darker it becomes.
Join storyteller Gav Cross and perhaps a late night ghost or two.
Certainly a twist on some old classics.
Almost certainly a smile.
Perhaps a nervous glimpse over the shoulder?
As we scratch our way into the darker routes of the stories we think we know.

“Gav Cross treats children like they’re horrible and adults like they’re children and the results are hilarious and magical. Gav brings energy, joy and a refreshing approach to traditional storytelling, getting the audience involved and keeping them on their toes with the unexpected twists and turns of his tales.” – Larmer Tree Festival

Performance Dates:
1 May 2026 8pm, The White Horse
11 June 2026 7.30pm, The Crown at Whitchurch
