In Memoriam

Company Orchestra of the Swan

String and wind principals from OOTS perform English and French music from the first half of the 20th century. Maurice Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin is based on the structure of a traditional baroque suite with each movement bearing a dedicaton to a friend of the composer who died fighting in the First World War. Composed between the wars in 1932 Finzi's Interlude for Oboe and Strings possesses all the intimate, personal and melancholic qualities of his immediately recognisable style. London-born Arnold Bax developed a passionate interest in Ireland, it people and its complex political situation. He was deeply shocked by the outcome of the Easter Rising in 1916. In Memoriam was originally titled An Irish Elegy and expresses his personal grief and depth of feeling about the appalling tragedy. String quartet with flute, oboe, cor anglais and harp
