Royal Ballet - Peter and the Wolf (2010)

Arts Alive Online

AVAILABLE ON DEMAND FROM 7pm on 27 March TO 26 April The Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet School perform Matthew Hart's Peter and the Wolf, choreographed to Prokofiev's charming music, as part of the Royal Opera House's #OurHouseToYourHouse series. Prokofiev’s famous symphonic fairytale, written for children, integrates narration with music in a format that is accessible and appealing to both young and old audiences alike. The format is set out clearly by the narrator, who introduces each character and explains their musical motifs: flutes for the Bird, clarinet for the Cat, strings for Peter and so on. The jaunty signature tune recurs throughout, a comforting reminder that in this fairytale world, good will always triumph over evil. To view go to: click here

Saturday16May

Royal Ballet - The Metamorphosis 2013

Arts Alive Online

STREAMING FOR FREE FROM 17 April TO 16 May Part of the OurHouseToYourHouse series. Gregor Samsa, a travelling salesman, awakes one morning to find that he has been turned into a monstrous insect. His mother, father and younger sister respond to his transformation in very different ways. Arthur Pita’s adaptation of Franz Kafka’s 1915 novella. The unusual and absurd story is conveyed through startling choreography – an intelligent presentation of the pressures and yearnings of the young Kafka. Frank Moon’s score and Simon Daw’s stark, white designs create a claustrophobic atmosphere, while the horror of Gregor’s physical alteration is evoked by black fluid that smears the stage. Although Gregor’s mother and father struggle to come to terms with his transformation, his younger sister, Grete, is more sympathetic. However, her feelings change and she undergoes her own metamorphosis as she moves from childhood to adulthood. The Metamorphosis won a South Bank Sky Arts Award and Edward Watson won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for his role. To view go to: click here

Saturday23May

Gloriana

Arts Alive Online

STREAMING FOR FREE FROM 7pm on 24 April TO 23 May Filmed live from The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, GLORIANA by Benjamin Britten is a portrait of the public and private faces of Elizabeth I and a brilliant depiction of the Tudor court and the tension between affairs of state and affairs of the heart. Focusing on Elizabeth’s relationship with the young Earl of Essex, Gloriana captures the dichotomy between the public image of the Virgin Queen and her seething personal feelings – a familiar dichotomy in these days of celebrity-worship and media scrutiny. Arts Alive Online
