Pain & Glory (15)

Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar’s (All About My Mother, Talk to Her, Volver, Julieta) 21st feature film Pain and Glory stars Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz. A nostalgic, semi-autobiographical tale, it follows Salvador Mallo (Banderas), a film director in decline as he explores a series of experiences and encounters from his past. Facing his mortality, he recalls his childhood in ‘60s Valencia, his first love affair in ‘80s Madrid, the pain of heartbreak and his fateful early discovery of cinema. A typically witty, sensuous, evocative and intelligent film, it is intensely personal and seems to show its writer-director coming to terms with the scale and depth of his body of work. Beautifully produced, it is rich with subtle pleasures, not least its stellar wider cast including Asier Etxeandia, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Nora Navas and Julieta Serrano alongside Banderas and Cruz.

Pavarotti (12a)

Featuring never-before-seen footage, concert performances and intimate interviews, filmmaker Ron Howard examines the life and career of the most successful opera singer of all-time, Luciano Pavarotti. This reveals how an elementary school teacher created thunder loud enough to make the world take notice and bringing Opera widespread popular appeal. Pavarotti’s optimism is contagious, and his schoolboy-like wonder means there’s a lot to smile at here.

Pepe le Moko (12a)

Pépé le Moko, one of France's most wanted criminals, hides out in the Casbah section of Algiers. He knows police will be waiting for him if he tries to leave the city. When Pépé meets Gaby Gould, a gorgeous woman from Paris who is lost in the Casbah, he falls for her. She also reminds him of all the things he loves about Paris. Even as Pépé knows he is being trailed by Inspector Slimane, he considers a future with Gaby.
