Madame Butterfly (Recorded Live) (U)

Opera recorded live at Teatro Alla Scala, Conducted by Riccardo Chailly.

'Madame Butterfly' first saw the light of day in La Scala in February 1904 and it was hotly contested. It became the victim of an ambush organised by the enemies of the composer and his editor but to their surprise, the audience were witnessing the very latest developments in European musical theatre. That same year, Giacomo Puccini revised and restaged the opera in Brescia to great acclaim, making Madame Butterfly one of his most performed works to date. The opera returned to Teatro Alla Scala, Milan in 2016 for the first time since its 1904 debut. The story follows the young Japanese geisha, Cio-Cio-San who clings on to the belief that her arranged marriage to a visiting American naval officer is loving and permanent. Set against the backdrop 20th century Japan, the story triggers ideas about cultural and sexual imperialism, coupled with Puccini’s lyrical score, making Madame Butterfly a timeless classic.
